Troubleshooting When Your Whirlpool Front Load Washer Won't Start

Although the failure of a part may require professional assistance, incorrect setup or a power issue could simply need the right DYI solution. Here's how to identify the problem when your Whirlpool front load washer won't turn on.

1. The Washing Machine is Not Receiving Power

Your Whirlpool front load washer will not start without a constant and adequate supply of electrical power.

The following power problems can prevent a washing machine from starting:

  • Washer is unplugged - make sure power cord is plugged into a working outlet
  • Tripped Circuit Breaker - Check for tripped circuit breakers in your home breaker box, adjust any as needed.
  • Using an extension cord - These cords cannot safely transmit the voltage that a washing machine requires, causing power surges that cut off power. Never use an extension cord to power your washing machine.
  • The washing machine needs a restart: restarting the machine can turn off and on, allowing you to start over. Unplug washer or turn off at circuit breaker. After a minute, restore power and try starting the washing machine.

2. Control Lock is Powered On

Is your Whirlpool washer stuck and won't turn on? The Control Lock function may be enabled. This feature locks out all functions of the washer to prevent accidental start-up. When Control Lock is on, you may see LoC or LC on the control panel.

The process to disable the Control Lock feature involves holding down a key or key combination. Consult your user manual to determine the deactivation process for your washer model. Once disabled, LoC or LC should disappear from the control panel.

3. Washer Door is Not Closed Properly

As a safety measure, your Whirlpool Front Load Washer will not start if the door is not completely closed and locked. Always close the door firmly, without knocking, to ensure that the latch is engaged. If the door does not close completely, check for loose clothing that may get caught in the door opening, preventing the latch from snagging.

Wondering why my Whirlpool front load washer won't turn on even if the door is closed? The latch may be faulty. If the latch does not click when latched, appears damaged, or does not show continuity with the multimeter test, it should be replaced by a professional.

4. Check the Settings on the Washing Machine

Always check the display panel to make sure you have selected the correct setting for your wash load. Settings such as Delay Start defer the start of a wash cycle to a pre-selected later time. Make sure the Delayed Start button was not accidentally activated when checking your settings.

If the display panel shows an error code, your Whirlpool front load washer will not start until the code is cleared. Consult your user manual to determine the meaning of the code and how to solve the problem. Lastly, the START button must be held down to turn on the machine. Be sure to press and hold the START button for 3 seconds to start a wash cycle.

5. Defective Whirlpool Washer Parts

If all else fails, a faulty part may be preventing your washer from starting.

The following parts can prevent your washer from turning on, requiring professional washer repair or replacement:

  • Display Board - If you find that the start button on your Whirlpool washing machine is not working, the display panel may be faulty. If some buttons work but others do not, the panel should be replaced.
  • Line Fuse - This fuse blows if the washer is in danger of overheating. Once blown, power to the washer is cut off and will not resume until the fuse is replaced. Before replacing the fuse, the washer should be evaluated for electrical or wiring problems that could cause overheating. Timer - The timer works with the control board to send voltage to various functions of the washer at certain times. If it does not show continuity with the multimeter test, it is probably not working properly and needs to be replaced.
