Tips to Cleaning Toys in the Dishwasher

Children’s toys get exposed to bacteria and germs everywhere, whether they are chewed on by their teeth or dragged through the dirt. Our tips for cleaning your toys in the dishwasher will not only clean your toys but also disinfect them.

Are Toys Safe to be Put in the Dishwasher?

Most people do not know that it is recommended to clean your baby’s favourite toys on a weekly basis and less used toys on a monthly basis. This may seem like a lot of extra work, but it becomes effortless when you use your dishwasher to clean plastic toys.

  • Use the top rack for medium-sized toys and the bottom rack for large toys such as trucks and cars.
  • Toss any small toys such as rattles and blocks, in the cutlery basket so they do not fall through the racks and break something during the washing cycle.
  • Using regular detergent and a gentle washing cycle to prevent damage to your toys.
  • Always ensure you turn off the heat dry function so that you do not damage or melt your toys.

This makes cleaning your children’s toys extremely easy and effortless.

Toys That Should Never be Put in the Dishwasher

  • Toys that are battery operated
  • Toys that are wooden
  • Toys that have a voice box or pull string
  • Toys that are plush
  • Toys that have loose or removable parts

To clean these toys that are not able to be put in the dishwasher, use a 1:1 ratio of vinegar to water to disinfect and clean. Using a clean cloth, dip it in the solution, and gently wipe your toys. Allow them to air dry when you finish and do this either weekly or monthly, depending on how used the toy is.
