Although it may seem like you can store all your foods in the refrigerator to ensure they get a longer lifespan, not all foods belong in the fridge. Some items require lower temperatures to preserve the foods but other require cooler temperatures to ensure the taste and texture does not decay. This list of 4 items you should not store in your fridge may shock you!

Here are the 4 foods we recommend that you store in room temperature:

Bread

Although many of us will store bread in the fridge to reduce the chance of mold appearing, bread is best stored in room temperature. Storing bread in room temperature ensures that you preserve the taste and texture of your bread products.

Where Should You Store it?

You can store it on the countertop or in a dark cupboard or pantry. If you are unable to finish the loaf of bread in a few days, you can preserve it by storing it in the freezer until you are ready to consume it.

Potatoes

Potatoes

Storing potatoes in the fridge can reduce the taste and texture. You may think that you can store any potatoes from sweet potatoes or baking potatoes in your fridge but it is actually detrimental to the taste and texture of any potato.

Once you cut up your melon, it is now safe to store it in the fridge as it is exposed to the air and is ripe enough.

Storing a whole, uncut melon in the fridge can actually stop it from fully ripening because of the cool temperatures. This reduces the flavour and it can also stop the development of valuable antioxidants that give melons their healthy aspects.

Where Should You Store it?

When your melons are not ripened, store them on your countertop. When you see the are ripe enough, cut them up, and store them in the refrigerator.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes

When tomatoes are stored in the fridge, they are permanently damaged by the cool temperatures. This will change the taste and texture of your fruit.

Why Should You Not Store it in the Fridge?

Tomatoes thrive in warm areas which allow them to continue to ripen – even after they have been picked. Refrigeration can stop the ripening process.
