How to Clean Whirlpool Washing Machine
If you own a Whirlpool washing machine, you already know how reliable and efficient it can be. But did you know that regular cleaning is essential to keep your machine running smoothly and to prevent odors, residue, and mold? Whether you have a top-load or front-load model, here’s a step-by-step guide to cleaning your Whirlpool washer the right way.
Why Cleaning Your Washer Matters
Over time, detergent residue, fabric softener, and dirt can build up in your washing machine. This buildup can lead to:
- Musty smells
- Bacteria and mold growth
- Inefficient performance
- Shortened appliance lifespan
Routine cleaning ensures your clothes stay fresh and your machine lasts longer.
What You’ll Need:
- White vinegar or a Whirlpool Affresh® tablet
- Baking soda (optional)
- Microfiber cloth
- Old toothbrush
- Warm water
- Mild dish soap
Cleaning a Whirlpool Top-Load Washing Machine
Step 1: Run a Cleaning Cycle
Whirlpool recommends using Affresh® washer cleaner tablets once a month. Simply drop one tablet into the drum (no laundry), and select the “Clean Washer” cycle. If you don’t have Affresh®, use 2 cups of white vinegar instead.
Step 2: Wipe Down the Dispenser and Lid
Remove the detergent and fabric softener dispensers and soak them in warm soapy water. Scrub with an old toothbrush to remove buildup. Dry and reinstall.
Use a damp cloth to clean under the lid and around the top rim of the tub.
Step 3: Clean the Agitator and Drum
If your model has an agitator, wipe around it with a cloth dipped in vinegar and water. For stubborn gunk, sprinkle some baking soda and gently scrub.
Cleaning a Whirlpool Front-Load Washing Machine
Step 1: Clean the Gasket
The rubber door seal (gasket) is a common place for mold and grime. Pull back the gasket and wipe it with a solution of 1 part vinegar to 1 part water. Use a toothbrush for tough spots.
Step 2: Run a Cleaning Cycle
Use an Affresh® tablet or 2 cups of vinegar directly in the drum. Select the “Clean Washer” cycle or the hottest and longest setting.
Step 3: Wipe Down the Door and Dispenser
Remove the detergent drawer and soak it in warm soapy water. Clean the inside of the dispenser compartment with a cloth or brush.
Dry the inside of the door and the drum after every use to prevent mold.
Bonus Tip: Clean the Drain Pump Filter (Front-Load Only)
Many Whirlpool front-load washers have a drain pump filter near the bottom front panel. Consult your user manual to locate and clean it—this catches lint, coins, and debris that can clog the drain.
How Often Should You Clean Your Whirlpool Washer?
- Deep clean: Once a month
- Gasket/dispenser wipe-down: Weekly
- Leave door open after use: Always (for front-load models)
