How to Perform Maintenance on Your Washing Machine.

Although we are an appliance repair company, we always want to educate our customers and the community on how to properly maintain their appliances themselves. One of the most important appliances to check up on and maintain is the washing machine. It may seem a little ironic that you want to wash your washer, no operating machine will last forever without maintenance, and your washer is no different. We have compiled a list of tips and tricks to prolong the lifespan of your washing machine without the need of a repair

Washer Maintenance

Check Your Hoses

The first, and most important, place to check for any damage is your hoses, having a damaged hose can lead to leaking of water. This can cause much bigger problems than just a repair for your washing machine. Check both the hot and the cold hoses that are connected from the tap to the washing machine. Check to ensure there are no cracks or blistering of the hoses and that the fittings are not corroding. If the hoses feel undamaged and you do not find any water around the hoses, there should not be any problems with your hoses. If you have experienced issues with your hoses in the past, you can upgrade to stainless steel fill hoses.

Ensure it is on a Flat Surface

For your unit to get the most optimal performance, it is essential that it is sitting on a flat surface. All washers are pretty heavy and if they are not on a level surface, they will vibrate strongly during the spinning cycle. If you have noticed that your washer is moving positions after it has run a cycle, it is likely it is not on a flat surface. All modern washing machines are now constructed with adjustable front legs that you can adjust to ensure it is sitting flat. To do this, tighten the lock nuts against the machine to ensure the legs do not move positions again. You can use a carpenter’s level to check and ensure that the machine is now sitting level.

Clean Your Washer Every 3 Months

The next important maintenance tip is to clean out the tub and the interior of the machine about every three months. Dilute ½ cup of baking soda and 3 cups of vinegar in hot water and add this to your washing machine. Using a heavy wash cycle and hot water - turn the washer on. When the cycle has completed, your washer has now been cleaned.

Use the Proper Amount of Laundry Detergent

Some laundry detergents contain chemicals that are not good over a long period of time for your appliance. Detergent companies explain to use far more detergent in their directions than you actually need to use. We recommend you use half of the amount the directions recommend you use. This little trick can help your washing machine perform for a longer period of time!
