Can a School Backpack be Washed in the Washing Machine?.

Wash backpack in washer

When the school year comes to an end, or you are halfway through, your child’s backpack may be getting a little bit grungy and nasty inside. You may be wondering if you can wash your child’s backpack in the washer. The answer to this question is – YES, you can. You can get the backpack back to being fresh and new in no time.

When it comes to washing odd items in the washer such as a backpack or a pair of shoes, it is essential that you know the proper way to do so.

1. Clean Out / Empty the Backpack

Always ensure that every pocket is empty before you put the backpack in the washing machine. Make sure all the little crevices are emptied out, not just removing all the large items. It is essential that there are no little items or pieces that are left behind as these can damage your washing machine.

2. Remove all Movable Parts

If the backpack has any removable straps, accessories, or anything that can be removed that can damage your washer – should be removed. This ensures that you will not wreck your backpack, washer, or the small pieces themselves.

These small pieces can now be stored in a laundry bag and washed in your washing machine. Using a laundry bag can help ensure you can wash all the pieces of your backpack while also not wrecking these pieces of your washing machine.

3. Pre-treat all Stains

Use 1-part water and 1-part heavy duty laundry detergent, pre-treat any and all stains on the backpack before you place it in the washing machine. Use a toothbrush to scrub the stains to remove any excess grim. You can also scrub inside the pockets and we highly recommend you do this before using your washing machine.

Once you have pre-treated your backpack, put it inside a large laundry bag and place it in the washer.

4. Disinfecting (optional)

If the backpack has been used for sweaty items such as a gym back or for sports it is recommend that you put a disinfectant into the washing water to help remove any bacteria. You can add at least 80% pine oil to do this trick – we recommend you use Pine-Sol for this. This will disinfect the backpack and ensure all bacteria is eliminated. This option is much safer than using bleach and will not wreck your backpack while disinfecting.

5. Wash in Washing Machine

Now you are ready to wash your backpack, put the laundry bag into the washing machine and let the washer do the magic! When the washer is complete, do not put the backpack in the dryer and let all the pockets and compartments air dry.
