Why is My Dryer Squeaking.

Fix my Dryer

It is safe to say that you are burnt out on tuning in to your dryer squeaking. Persevering through a loud dryer can make doing your laundry a daunting and annoying task. There are a few issues we commonly see that cause dryers to squeak. These include a lack of lubricated bearings or wheel rollers, a drive belt that is needing to be replaced, or a problem with your motor. These tips we have can help you troubleshoot your dryer and identify/resolve the problem yourself.

Here are a Few Tips for Why Your Dryer is Squealing

First things first, start your dryer up and listen closely –

can you tell what area the squeaking is coming from?

1.  Squeaking is coming from the back of the dryer

If you just identified the squealing is coming from the back of your dryer this often means that your roller wheels or drum bearing needs lubrication. This task is an easy one and can be performed by any dryer owner. Below you can find out how to do this on your own. We recommend lubricating all of your wheels while you are doing this as you may as well do them all.

  i)  Unplug and remove the power source for your dryer

ii)  Take out the lint screen

iii) Using a putty knife (if necessary) remove the top panel of your dryer

iv)  Locate and disconnect the wire harness plug

  v)  There are screws along the top edge of the front panel that hold it in place, remove these screws

vi)  Lift up the front panel from the dryer housing

vii) Remove the belt drive from the drum and then remove the drum from the housing

viii) Using 30-weight oil – apply to the wheel axles that are located inside the dryer housing and to the rear drum bearing that is located in the back of the drum

ix)  Replace all the parts and test out your dryer to ensure this fixed the squeaking

 2.   Squeaking is coming from the top of the unit

This often means that your drive belt needs replacing and if you are feeling confident, you can repair this yourself. Below you can find steps on how to do this yourself.

  i)  Disconnect the dryer from power

ii)  Take out the lint screen

iii) Remove the top panel – you may need a putty knife to help you do this

iv)  Dissemble the harness wire plug

  v)  Remove the screws that are holding the front panel in place

  vi)  Remove the front panel

vii) We recommend you take a picture of where the belt goes under the drum so you can easily place the new one.

viii) Remove the old drive belt

ix)  Replace the old belt with the new belt – you will need to slowly feed the belt around the idler pulley and then the motor pulley.

  x)  Put together all the pieces to the dryer that you have taken apart

  3.  Squeaking is coming from the bottom of the dryer

If your squeaking is coming from the bottom of your dryer, it is likely that your motor is failing. If this is the cause of the squeaking, it is the worst-case scenario as dryer motors can be expensive and it makes the most sense to replace the unit completely. We recommend you call in one of our professionals to consult with a qualified appliance technician to ensure this is the cause of the squealing before you decide to replace.
